Prices
Throughout this year we have absorbed two brewery increases and two chancellor's increases. The recent decrease in Vat looked good news for us only to find that duty on alcohol had increased by the same margin. The bar committee has worked hard to negotiate some good deals from suppliers and has kept increases to an absolute minimum.
Saturday Night
The financial doom and gloom of 2008 does not appear to have affected us as much as it has other clubs. Our sales are slightly up on last year but some disappointments in the concert room have once again led to a slight deficit. The entertainment committee has worked hard to provide suitable entertainment throughout the year but still struggle to attract members. The biggest concern is Saturday night. For many years Saturday has been a successful night of dancing to live music. Unfortunately as the older members have gradually dropped off they have not been replaced and numbers are dwindling. In pure financial terms we need at least 80 paying members or guests just to cover the cost of the band, doorman, VAT and extra bar staff. Recent numbers of between 30 and 50 mean that we lose money every Saturday night, a night which has historically been the best night at Walmley club. There must be many members who are unaware of what we have to offer on a Saturday night. Where else could you get live music and dancing at a venue like ours for £2.50.
Our Steward John Griffin will provide set meals, basket meals or a buffet for small parties on a Saturday but if you want exclusive use of the room for a celebration you will have to apply to the committee for a Friday night. You can sign in two other couples on a Saturday so come on let us make Saturday night at Walmley the place to be.
