INTRODUCTION - In compiling a history of the Social Club it is necessary to go back to the year 1903, the reason being that the present Club is the successor to one formed in that year known as the "Walmley Working Men's Club."
1902
When the Parish Room was erected in 1902, one of the objects for its use was to provide a meeting place for a Club. The foundation Stone of the Parish Room was laid by Mrs H H Coldwell Horsfall, wife of the owner of, and resident at, Penns Hall, on the 15th October 1902. Mr Horsfall provided the site of the Room and contributed to the cost of erection, the remainder of the cost being provided by local residents and from Funds raised by Dances, Whist Drives, Concerts and other Social events.

On the 5th October, 1903, a meeting was held in the Parish Room and was attended by 30 men, which number was a very fair proportion of the male residents of the district at that period. The then Vicar of Walmley, the Rev. J F Forge, was voted to the Chair and after a discussion, Mr E W North (then Station Master at Penns) proposed and Mr Thos. Beavan seconded that a Club be formed. This was approved and provisional Officers were appointed to prepare a Scheme and to Report to a later Meeting. This provisional Committee and Officers consisted of the Vicar and other local male residents, namely, John Izon, Arthur Weaver, Albert Bridger, Edgar Whitehouse, Geo. Bedman, S.Shuttleworth and L. Le-Bon with Colonel George Walker as Chairman, George Chase as Hon: Treasurer and Mr E W North as Hon: Secretary.
On the 12th October, 1903, the provisional Committee presented a Report and draft Rules for a Club to a further Meeting of 35 prospective Members and it was unanimously resolved to adopt the Rules and elect Officers for the Club which was to be called "The Walmley Working Men's Club."
Rules from 1903
Mr Horsfall was elected President and the persons who had acted as the provisional Officers and Committee were again elected, except that John Silk became Hon: Secretary in place of E. W. North who was elected Assistant Hon: Sec. while F.J. Miller was added to the Committee and Chas. Bridger elected as Librarian. The Annual Subscription was fixed at four shillings, and the minimum age for Member-ship as 16. A Steward was also appointed and paid five shillings per week;

1906
A Billiards Table was purchased (this is still in use being No. 4 in the present Clubroom) also a Bagatelle Table. This position continued till a General Meeting on 17th November 1906 when E. W. North again became Hon: Secretary and I (having attained the age of 16) was elected Hon: Asst.Secretary.
At the next Annual General Meeting held on the 17th October 1907, Mr North resigned and I was elected Hon: Secretary and F.H. Humphries Hon: Treasurer.
1910
In December 1910, F.H. Humphries resigned and Mr. Horsfall became Hon: Treasurer. At the Annual General Meeting for 1911, I resigned as Hon: Secretary (owing to having to attend Evening Classes) and was elected to the Committee, F. Worrell being elected as Hon:Secretary in my stead.
In the following year the Revd. J.F. Forge who had been Chairman of the Committee for several years resigned and was elected as an Auditor, and Mr G. Dawson Collins was elected as Chairman.
The Club continued to run smoothly, although its finances never showed any substantial improvement nor did the number of Members increase, and the balance in hand on 30th September 1913 was £11. 8.11.
1914 - for map of walmley 1914
August 1914 was a crisis month for the Club as it saw the commencement of the First Great War when the younger members and the majority of the Officers of the Club (including myself) enlisted in the Services and from that time till early in 1920 the few older Members who were not in the Services carried on the Club as best they could and only scanty records are available for that period. During the War period food parcels and other gifts were regularly sent to the Service Members and these were greatly appreciated by the recipients. On the 18th May 1920 (the Great War having ended and the Service Members returned) a General Meeting was held at which 25 Members were present. The Accounts for the period 1914 to 1920 were placed before the Meeting and these showed a balance of Cash in hand of £34. Officers were appointed as follows:- Mr.Horsfall as President and Hon: Treasurer, Committee Messrs. G.H. Cotterill, T. Teasdale, F. Jackson, E. W. North, W.H. Nicklin and myself with Councr. J.P. Britton as Chairman and Mr. Thos. Dutton as Hon:Sec. The last named however was not able to carry out the duties for more than a few weeks after his election and I was asked to take over the Office once again which I did and so commenced my further term as Hon: Secretary which was to last until the year 1934 when the Working Men's Club became the Social Club.
1921
By the end of 1921, a second Billiards Table had been purchased, by means of loans from Members and the accounts to the 31st December of that year (1921) showed a balance in hand of £93.18. 6.
1922/23- for news report and text version from 1922
It has to be realised that as the headquarters of the Club was the Parish Room, the premises were available for hire by any Association or resident of the Parish and when so hired the Club was not able to have the use of the Room. Prior to the Great War, the hirings were only infrequent but after the termination of the War the development of the district began and the "outside" hiring of the Parish Room increased very substantially and this caused much embarrassment and annoyance of the Club Committee and Members as it meant greatly diminished use and income for the Club. By the end of 1923 the loans made by Members for the purchase of the second Billiards Table had been repaid, and the accounts showed cash in hand of £31.5.0.
1924/25 In the winter of 1924/25 the Club's teams won the Trophies of the First and Second divisions of the Sutton Coldfield Social Club Union Billiards League.

At the Annual General Meeting held on the 12th March 1925 when 50 Members were present the Committee were instructed to formulate a Scheme for obtaining new premises or at least an extension of its present building and at the following years Annual Meeting a report was given that a Plan and scheme, which had been prepared for additional accommodation, was being considered by the Parish Room Trustees. At that Meeting Mr. G.H. Cotterill who had been serving as Hon:Asst: Secretary resigned and Mr B.A.Smith was elected in his place and he acted in the Office for one year when he was elected to the Committee. By the end of 1927 "The Club had £114 cash in hand and negotiations for further accommodation were still in progress.
1929 - for news report and text version from 1928
At the Annual Meeting for 1929, it was reported that it did not seem likely that the scheme for further rooms in the Parish Room would materialise and the Committee were requested to take steps to obtain a new site for the Club. At that Meeting Mr John Frost took over the Office of Hon:Asst:Sec: and Mr Tom Fletcher the duties of Steward at a salary of £10. per annum.

In May 1931, Councilor (later Alderman) J.P. Britton who had been Chairman of the Club Committee for eleven years was elected Mayor of Sutton Coldfield. At the Annual General Meeting held on 1st April 1932, a Report was received from a Sub-committee which had been elected by the Club's General Committee to formulate a Scheme for a new Club in new buildings, which Sub.Comm: included representatives of other Social organisations of the Village as it was hoped that a new Club would provide a meeting place for all the Social and sporting activities of the District, namely Councillor F.W. Terry (Bowling Club) A.Edwards (Residents Association) Arthur J. Terry (Football Club) Norman W. Taylor (Cricket Club) John Frost and Walter Loat (W.M. Club) with Thomas Grainger as Architect and Technical Adviser and myself as Hon: Secretary.
This Report stated that the Sub Committee had held several meetings and hoped to formulate a definite Scheme and submit it with a Plan in the very near future. The continued rapid -development of the District was making it most difficult for the W.M. Club Members as the Parish Room was being booked on many more occasions for other local activities which meant that the Club was unable to function on several nights each week and at the end of 1933 it was decided to suspend the activities of the Club pending provision of a new building.
1933
The formation Sub-Committee had been meeting regularly and at the end of 1933, had obtained Plans and an idea of the cost of Club Buildings in accordance with such Plans and these were submitted to a meeting and approved by the former Members of the old W.M.Club. In view of this the Formation Sub Committee made an Appeal for financial assistance, and the response to this Appeal was considered sufficient to warrant further steps to be taken to obtain a site for the Club buildings. The position was placed before Mr. Horsfall and he readily agreed to provide a plot of land for erection of the buildings. He shortly afterwards suggested a Plot in the rear of the Schools with an access alongside the Church yard wall and adjoining the Bowling Club's Greens. Shortly afterwards, however, the Committee had a disappointment as Mr. Horsfall informed them that it was likely the plot of land he had offered would be required for a future extension of the School but he said he would find us another site and eventually he offered the plot on which the main portion of the present buildings (comprising the site on which the first 4 Billiards Tables, Bar and small lounge with toilets and Boiler house) now stand, and which has an area of 1032 square yards, on a Lease for 21 years at an annual rent of £8.10.0. This offer was gratefully accepted by the Formation Sub: Committee and Tenders for the erection of the buildings were invited from Builders. After receiving Tenders, one from Harrison Smith Buildings Ltd. of £1022. was accepted and work was then commenced on the erection of the buildings. At the end of November 1934, the dream of the Formation Committee and former members of the old Working Men's Club became reality and on the 1st December 1934 the new Club was formally opened by Alderman J.P. Britton, as the President, Mr Horsfall was unable to be present. At that time the Membership was 63, and the annual Subscription ten shillings. Our first Steward was Mr. Wm. Beavan a local disabled ex-service man and he held the post for several years until the work increased to an extent that it was not possible for a physically handicapped person to manage it.
1935
In order to coincide with the calendar year, the first accounts for submission to a General Meeting were prepared to the 31st December 1934, and the Meeting was held in February 1935, by when the Membership had risen to more than 100. Several gifts were made to the Club including the electric clock (which is still in working order over the door of the Secretary's Office) by Mrs. Showell of Walmley House, who was a Daughter of Mr Horsfall; Cups one for Snooker and the other for Billiards competitions respectively by Councillor Moss and Alderman Britton and for Table Tennis by Mr. A J. Weaver and for Darts by Alderman Sir A.G.B. Owen.
1936
In 1936, a further strip of land six yards wide and running alongside the Eastern boundary of the land already leased to the Club and having an area of 317 square yards was taken on Lease at an additional rent of £2.13.0 per annum. Similarly, in 1939 a further strip six yards wide on our eastern boundary was leased to the Club at a further rent of £2.13.0 per annum.
1934 - 46
It is regretted that the Club Minute Book covering the years 1934 to 1946 cannot be traced. I can only surmise that it was inadvertently destroyed when the original Bar was reconstructed in 1947 but by newspaper cuttings which I have and from old Annual Reports and Accounts kindly loaned to me by Mr. Harold Makepeace who has preserved such Reports since the year 1941, I am able to fill in details of the Club's progress from 1939 to 1946 when the second Minute Book is available.
The Report for 1939 pointed out that the future would be a period of uncertainty owing to the breaking out of the Second World War in August 1939, as Members would be away by reason of joining H.M.Forces and the various Civil Defence Corps. The trading profit for 1939 was £145 and the General Fund stood at £522. During the year (1939) the Club building was extended in the rear, and a fifth Snooker Table was purchased and on the outbreak of the War this extension was taken over by the Auxiliary Fire Service as a Sub Station. This occupation was very beneficial to the Club as the service members kept all the interior of the premises clean and polished and also contributed revenue by using the Snooker Tables (both day and night) The Tables were also used by an Anti-aircraft Battery stationed in Walmley Ash Road. The A.F.S. also erected the two Garages and other buildings in the rear of the Club. On the 2nd April 1941, the Club and the District in general sustained a grievous loss by the death of our President Mr H.H.C. Horsfall. He had been President of the old Working Men's Club from its formation in 1903 till 1934 and its Hon, treasurer from 1910 till 1934 and he became President of the Social Club on its formation in 1934. He was ever ready to assist any social movement in Walmley and, as previously stated, in this "History" he provided the site of the Club and also gave financial assistance.

At the next Annual General Meeting his son, Colonel James H.C. Horsfall was elected as our President.
1942
At the Annual General Meeting held on the 15th September 1942, the annual Subscription was raised to £1. The Report of the Committee stated that gifts had been sent regularly to the Members who were serving in the Forces and these were 28 on active service, 29 in the Home Guard, 15 in the Fire Service and 27 in other Civil Defence Units, a total of 99. It also stated that Mr. S.E. Arrowsmith who had been the Club Treasurer since its formation had resigned as he was leaving the District and Mr A.J. Terry was elected in his place. The General Fund had by now increased to £602. Messrs. R. Collier, H. Totty and G.A. Young were thanked for organising a Dance which had resulted in a profit of £34.10. 0. for the Service Members Gift Fund. The Report also congratulated - Councillors Moss and A.G.B. (Now Sir) Owen (who had been Vice-President. of the Club since its formation) on respectively being elected Mayor of Sutton and Chairman of Darlaston W.D. Council.
The Report on the year 1942 stated that the Membership had increased to 223 as had the Service Members to 119. Thanks were accorded to Messrs. R.Collier, P. Jones, F.H. Mills and A.J. Weaver for promoting a Competition which had provided £41.17. 6. for the Service Members Gifts Fund.
At the A.G.M. for 1942, Mr. A.J.Terry resigned as Hon:Treasurer and Mr. G.N. Holmes (who is still serving in the Office) was elected in his stead.
1943
The Report for the year 1943, stated that the Membership was 229 of whom 38 were still in the Forces. The General Fund stood at £627. The Club had invested in "Wings for Victory" Defence Bonds £150 and raised £25. for Mrs Winston Churchill's "Aid to Russia" Fund and £50 for the Merchant Navy. The Club lost the services of Ald: J.P. Britton through death, he having been Chairman of the Committee since formation of the Club and Mr. Frederick W. Terry was elected in his place.
1944
The Report for 1944 showed an excellent profit of £226 and stated that the General Fund had increased to £855. The Membership was 246 of whom 38 were still in the Forces. During the year an exhibition of Billiards and Snooker games was staged by Mr. Melbourne Inman, a former English Professional Champion and this resulted in £131.5.0. being forwarded to the "Red Cross" Society.
1945
In that year a Building Fund was inaugurated with £53. which had been raised by Competitions and by 1945 that amount had been increased to £592. A Dance was held at Sutton Town Hall which resulted in a profit of £163 half of which was donated to the Mayoress of Sutton Coldfield Fund and the balance to the Club's Building Fund. The membership was 227 including 22 still in the Services.
1946
By 1946 all our Service Members had returned and the Membership had increased to 244. Our combined funds showed a total of £1567. 2. 4. In that year Alderman Fred W. Terry, one of the Foundation Members of the Club became Mayor of Sutton Coldfield. A further Dance was held in the Sutton Town Hall and this resulted in a profit of £50.16. 6. half of which was donated to the Maternity Home Fund of the Mayoress and the remainder to the Club Building Fund, raising it to £882.4.2
1947
In 1947 the opportunity arose for the Club to purchase the freehold of its site together with the Land adjoining to Jones' Wood and to the Bowling Greens and a plot of garden around between the Parish Room and the Villas in Walmley Road at a total cost (including legal fees and stamp duty) of £2182. 8. 9. of which £1350. was raised by issue of Loan Stock to Members. In addition to that purchase the Club took over from the Fire Service the two brick built garages and other erections in part settlement of the compensation for its occupation of the site during the War years, plus a payment by the Club of £30. The combined total of the Club's funds was £1957 of which £1103.19.11. belonged to the Building Fund. The annual Report congratulated the Club's Billiards and Snooker Teams on winning two of the Shields and sets of medals in the Sutton Coldfield Social Club's Union Leagues also Mr J.Clifford for winning the Union's Individual Championship Cup for Billiards and Mr. Clive Cotterill on reaching the Final of the Individual Snooker Competition. A Cup given for competition by one-armed Snooker players by our Mr. A.J. Weaver was won by our original Steward, Mr. Wm.Beavan.
1948
During1948 Lt. Col. J. H. C. Horsfall who had been the Club President since 1941 died and at the A.G.M. Mr. Norman Taylor was elected in his stead, and Mr. F.W. Terry also resigned as Chairman of the Committee and Mr. G.A.Young was elected to that office.
The Annual Report for 1948 stated that the combined Funds had increased to £2213. of which £1121.19.0. belonged to the Building Fund. Donations of £10 had been made to the United Nations Appeal for Children and £12.14. 6. to the Cripples Hospital. Consideration had been given to a suggestion that the Bar should be transferred to the Annexe in the rear end of the Club which had been in the occupation of the Fire Service but it was considered the cost was prohibitive and it was decided to refix the fifth Snooker table there. The gift of a set of Sporting prints by Mr Horace Mills was acknowledged. The Club Billiards and Snooker Teams won all four of the Leagues in the Sutton Coldfield Social Club's Union Competitions and Mr. F.J. Fletcher won the Union's Individual Billiards Championship. At that A.G.M. a proposal was made that the Club should be open on Sundays but this was not supported. During the year the opportunity arose for the Club to purchase a 3 &1/2 acre field in the rear of Jones' Wood (now used as a Football pitch) and as Members of the Club also interested in the Football Club offered to take up Loan Stock in the Social Club for the amount of the purchase money, this land was purchased for £405. An interesting request was made to the Club at this time to which the Club Committee were prepared to accede this was the use of the Clubrooms by the Roman Catholic Church authorities for their services on Sundays, which letting continued for several years until the new R.C. Church was erected.
1949
The Report on the year 1949 showed the Membership was 243 and the combined surplus Funds £2717. 8. 1. The Club's teams again won two of the League trophies in the Sutton Union Competitions. A Dance promoted by Messrs. T. H. Totty and W.R.Armstrong resulted in a profit of £25 for the Club Building Fund. Mr. John Frost (one of our Foundation Committee) presented a Cup for competition by our Golf playing members and the first winner was Mr. J.Daniels.
1950
In the Report for 1950, the accumulated Funds were stated to be £2963. During that year the two alcoves on the Western side of the Club were erected. Owing to continued ill-health our President, Nr Norman W.Taylor, resigned his Office and Mr. F.W.Terry was elected in his stead.
1952
In 1952 the Club's teams won 3 of the 4 trophies of the Sutton Social Clubs Leagues and J.H.Clifford two of the 3 individual Championship Trophies and Mr. S. Tooth the other.

Owen one of our Vice Presidents on the honour of C.B.E. conferred on him in the New Year's Honours list, and also the Clubs teams on again winning two of the Sutton Social Club Leagues. Mr W.R. Waters presented a Cup for the Annual Xmas Handicap winner and this was won by Mr. J.H.Clifford.
1956
In April 1956, a Dinner Dance was held at the Boldmere Hotel and was well supported by Members and Ladies, and on this occasion I was presented with a Gold Watch in appreciation of 21 years service to the (new) Social Club.
1957 - for news report and text version from 1957
During the year 1957 a small plot of land was sold to the M.E.B. for £150. which amount was credited to our Building Fund. During the year Gifts of Replica Cups for the "Britton" and "Moss" Cups winners were made by Mr. N. Paulin and a carpet for the Committee Room by Mr. A.J. Weaver. An exhibition by Mr. Rex Williams, the Midlands professional Snooker Champion, on the Club's table produced £42 for the funds of the Spastics Society and another Club Competition provided £10. 4. 9 for the party funds of Sir Josiah Mason's Orphanage. The Midland Counties Ass. Boys Championship Final was played at the Club.
It was resolved at the A.G.M. for 1957 that the future Subscription of Members elected prior to 1st April 1957 should be £1 on reaching the age of 65. During the year Mr. G. A. Young resigned as Chairman of the Committee and Mr. T.A. Powell was elected in his place.

The 1958 the main room of the Club was carpeted and towards the cost Mr. A.J. Weaver made a generous donation. Other gifts were received from Mr. N. Paulin - prizes for Handicaps - and Mr. S. Bachelor a piano and stool. An event which gave much pleasure was the conveyance in Members Cars of a party of old folk to Kings Bromley, where a tea and entertainment was provided for them. This year also saw the first of the Ladies nights when members entertained Ladies in the Club.
1959
In 1959 the trading profit was a record (£1,218) the sales (also a record) having been £15,190. A Television set was installed in the Lounge by Mr. A.J.Weaver. Another old folks outing was arranged and a party of 80 were transported in Members cars to Stourport and after a 2 hour steamer trip to Holte Fleet on the River Severn they were entertained to Tea there and then returned to Stourport and returned home. 1961
By 1961 the Membership had increased to 287. A new Cup was presented by Mr. B.Lille for a Football match between the Social Club and the Football Club each Xmas Day and the first years game was won by the Football Club (as also the 2nd year's game) During the year ALD: F.W.Terry resigned from the Presidency owing to ill-health and was succeeded in Office by Mr.A.J.Weaver. The new lounge, cellarage and toilets were completed and were formally opened by the President Mr. A.J.Weaver and the Lounge was named "The Gannaway Lounge". The Committee were pleased to acknowledge the long service given to the Club by Aid: Terry by electing him the first Life Member. At the A.G.M. the Entrance fee for new Members was increased to £2. 2. 0.
1962
The year 1962 showed a further record in the trading account profit at £1603 and the excess of Assets over liabilities at £7,227. This was an unfortunate year so far as I personally was concerned as on medical advice I was compelled to relinquish the Secretaryship of the Club. This was a sad decision for me to make after nearly 50 years of service to the two Clubs, service which had given me much pleasure and made me many friends, and I was greatly touched by the many expressions of thanks I received from Members also for the cash Testimonial presented to me and further by being elected & Life Member of the Club, and it gave me much pleasure to reciprocate in a small way by presenting an Electric Clock for the Gannaway Lounge. On my resignation Mr. Bob Brierwood was elected Secretary of the Club
1963
The year 1963, showed an increase of 17 in the membership at 299 and the trading profit was £1,549. and the accumulated Reserves were £8,659. and increase of £1,433. An exhibition of Snooker was given by the Midlands Professional Mr. Rex Williams on behalf of the N.S.P.C.C. and this resulted in raising a sum of £47. for the Society.
1964
In 1964 Mr A.J.Weaver continued as President but Mr Brierwood resigned as Hon: Secretary and Mr. Eric Little took over the office. The year showed a profit of £1,584. on the trading account and the surplus Assets were increased by £1,899. to £10,558. All the Loan Stock issued to Members was paid off.
1965 - for news report and text version from 1965
In 1965, I was elected President of the Club. During the year £1,583. was expended in providing a new Bar, and other amenities. The reserve and surplus Funds stood at £12,330. In March of that year Alderman F.W.Terry died. He was a Member of the original Working Men's Club and one of the formation Committee of the Social Club. He had also been Chairman of the Committee for several years and President and Life Member. In 1966 Mr T.A.Powell who had proved a very capable Chairman of the Committee for several years resigned and Mr. S.Bachelor was elected in his stead. Mr Eric Little also resigned as Hon:Sec: and Mr. Brian Hancox succeeded him. Mr Arthur J Terry died in April of the year. Like his Brother (Aid: F.W.Terry) he was a Member of the W.M.Club and one of the Committee that formed the Social Club and he acted as Hon:Treasurer in 1942. The death of the Terry Brothers meant that only 4 of the Committee that formed the Social Club survived, namely, John Frost, Thos. Grainger, Walter Loat and myself.

In Dec. 1966 Alien Inglis a respected Member of the Club for many years emigrated to New Zealand and a present of a stainless steel Tea Service was made to him and his Wife on behalf of our Members.

The Report for 1967 stated that the year closed with our Membership at 286 and our accumulated Reserve funds at £16,572. In addition to the Annual Dance promoted by Mr. J. Stewart and his Sub-Committee a new function had been arranged by Mr. S. G. Bachelor in the shape of a Buffet Dance at Drayton Manor and in view of the manner in which that was supported a repeat in 1968 was envisaged. The Club rejoined the Sutton Coldfield Social Club's Union and entered two teams in its 2 Snooker Leagues and each team were runners-up in their Leagues. This is revival of a long association with the Competition and can be understood, seeing that it was a friendly match between our Club and Sutton Y.M.C.A. in 1910 that a League was suggested by Alderman Arthur E.Terry of Four Oaks, the then Secretary of the Y.M. and at a Meeting with other Clubs held shortly afterwards the Union was inaugurated with Aid: Terry as the President a position he held till 1945 when he resigned and I was elected in his place with Jim Fletcher of our Club as Hon: Treasurer. In December 1967 Albert Wade one of our Members emigrated to Johannesburg and he was presented with a Silver Tankard on behalf of his fellow Members.
The Annual Report for 1967 mentioned that the Committee had been giving consideration to the question of further development of the Club premises and had asked a firm of Architects to advise on the possibility of such development. At the end of the year Mr. G.N. Holmes completed 25 years service as our Hon: Treasurer having taken up the office in 1943 and I am sure our Members are grateful to him for the very efficient service he has given. During the year the Committee had been pleased to allow the Warwickshire Police to play off their County Championship Matches on our tables, as had been the custom for several previous years.
Finally, I have derived much pleasure from my researches in compiling this History and many happy memories have been revived and I trust that it will be of interest to my fellow Members. It is clear that much progress has been made since 1903 (indeed since 1934) and it is my sincere hope that such progress will continue and that the Club will be a source of pleasure to present and future Members for many more years. There is ample opportunity for further amenities such as Tennis and Bowls.
